Child Safety
Keeping your children safe generally tops the list of concerns for new parents. But, child safety is an issue for children of any age. Doctors begin talking about the care and wellbeing of a child when it’s still in the womb. Expectant mothers are expected to take in adequate vitamins and minerals, as well as water and calories to ensure the good health of a growing baby. Though infants are fairly immobile, there are safety concerns to attend to. It’s vital that new parents keep a close watch for recalls of the products they use for their babies, such as toys, cribs, bassinets, and high chairs. In some cases, mistakes on the part of manufacturers or malfunctions have caused injury, and even death. Recalls are frequently posted in department stores and are widely available on the internet.
When children begin crawling or walking, their access to the world around them opens up. They begin to put to good use their sense of taste and touch. This is a time when safety becomes increasingly important. Safety plugs for outlets and baby gates are popular items in households with children of this age.
While safety within the home may become less of a concern as children grow, there are still many dangers of which parents should be aware. Parents should make sure that children old enough to walk to school are aware of traffic rules, such as looking both directions before crossing the street and paying attention to all pedestrian signage. In addition, children must be taught about proper posture and seat belt usage while riding in any motorized vehicle. Children should also wear protective gear when playing certain sports and when rollerblading or riding their bicycles.
