Child Protection
There is nothing more innocent or helpless than a child. For this reason, child protection is of great political and individual concern. There are organizations all over the world formed for the very purpose of protecting children. In order to ensure the future of a family, and of the world, it’s vital that today’s children are able to grow into tomorrow’s successful, healthy adults.
To do your part to protect children, it’s essential to know what it is you are protecting them from. As much as you might like to, it’s impossible to protect every child from every danger. To be truly effective, devote yourself to one or two causes or issues. There are many instances of abuse, maltreatment and neglect of children with mitigating factors such as poverty, domestic violence and poor sanitation. These issues can be addressed directly and indirectly through volunteer programs and by monetary donation.
Child exploitation is another frighteningly common, but oft overlooked problem. Exploitation is the use of a child for monetary or personal gain, usually in an illegal manner and without the permission of a parent. Some people have argued that child acting is a form of exploitation. While this may contain elements of exploitation, it is not illegal, and generally child actors are compensated. However, other issues, such as child pornography, child prostitution, and the child sex trade are issues with grave emotional, psychological, physical and political ramifications.
Agencies, such as Child Protective Services, investigate complaints of child abuse, child labor, neglect and poor living conditions. Once a concern had been lodged, the agency may examine the child’s environment and family life. In cases of domestic abuse, children may be removed from the home. In other situations, such as those resulting from extreme poverty, an agency may attempt to intervene by providing the family with support services to help prevent future maltreatment.
